StepGoals: The iPhone Step Tracking App That Actually Motivates You

We built StepGoals because we were frustrated with step trackers that just count steps. Here's what makes us different.

Most iPhone step tracking apps do one thing: they show you a number. At the end of the day, you either hit your goal or you didn't. That's it.

We found that approach kind of depressing. If you check the app at 8pm and you're at 4,000 steps with a 10,000-step goal, what's your reaction? Probably "I give up." The gap is too big, the night is too short, and the motivation just isn't there.

That's the problem we set out to solve when we built StepGoals — a free iPhone pedometer and step counter app designed around motivation, not just measurement.

The Motivation Gap

Fitness research consistently shows that small, achievable targets are more motivating than one big distant goal. Psychologists Edwin Locke and Gary Latham, whose goal-setting theory is among the most replicated in behavioural science, found that proximal (near-term) sub-goals significantly outperform single distal targets for sustaining effort. It's the reason marathon runners think in mile splits, not total distance. Breaking a big challenge into manageable chunks makes the whole thing feel possible.

StepGoals applies this idea to daily step tracking. Instead of just showing you a single 10,000-step target, the walking app calculates a personalized sequence of intermediate milestones throughout the day. When you open the app at 2pm, you don't see "6,500 steps to go." You see your next achievable target — maybe it's 500 steps away. That's a walk around the block. That's doable right now.

We call this the Motivation Target system, and it's the core of what makes StepGoals feel different from any other step counter or pedometer app out there. Read our deep dive on how the Motivation Box works.

Streaks That Actually Mean Something

The second thing we obsessed over was streak tracking. Streaks are a powerful psychological tool — they create a "don't break the chain" effect that keeps you coming back day after day. Research on habit formation by Lally et al. (2010) found that consistent daily repetition is the primary driver of habit automaticity, and that missing a single day has less impact on long-term habit formation than most people fear. But most apps treat streaks too harshly.

Miss one day? Streak gone. Zero. Start over.

That's brutal. Life is unpredictable. You get sick. You have a crazy travel day. You have a kid who needs you. One bad day shouldn't erase weeks or months of real effort.

StepGoals includes streak protections — a limited resource you can use to save your streak on days when you just can't hit your goal. It's not a free pass (you only get a handful per month on the free tier, and more with Pro), but it means that genuine setbacks don't have to destroy your momentum.

Your Data, Deep Insights

StepGoals syncs directly with Apple Health, so the iPhone step tracker can see your complete walking and activity history from day one. The Insights tab gives you weekly, monthly, and yearly breakdowns of your performance — not just totals, but trends, patterns, and comparisons that help you understand how you're actually doing over time.

The app also tracks distance, calories, active minutes, and floors climbed alongside your daily steps, giving you a full picture of your movement.

Awards and Milestones

We built an awards system because we believe achievements deserve to be celebrated. Hit a 7-day streak? You've earned it. Import a year of step data? That's a real accomplishment. Reach 10 million total steps? We've got a badge for that.

These aren't just vanity features. They're checkpoints — moments of recognition that reinforce the habit you're building.
