How Long Does It Take to Walk 10,000 Steps?
Enter your step goal and walking pace to find out exactly how much time you need to set aside.
How to use this calculator
- Choose Imperial or Metric for your distance unit.
- Enter your step goal — defaults to 10,000, but change it to match your personal target.
- Select your walking pace — pick the one that best describes how you naturally walk.
- Click Calculate.
Tip: The result is total walking time, not a single continuous session. Most people reach their step goal across multiple shorter walks throughout the day.
How it works
Step cadence by pace
Walking time is calculated from step cadence — the number of steps taken per minute at each pace. This calculator uses the following cadence estimates, consistent with values from Tudor-Locke et al. (2011) published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity: Slow stroll ≈ 85 steps/min, Casual ≈ 95 steps/min, Moderate ≈ 110 steps/min, Brisk ≈ 125 steps/min, Power walk ≈ 140 steps/min. Time is then: minutes = step goal ÷ steps per minute.
Putting it in perspective
Tudor-Locke's research established that 100 steps per minute (moderate pace) is a practical threshold for moderate-intensity walking — a cadence that's been adopted by the CDC as a simple rule of thumb. For the average adult at moderate pace, 10,000 steps takes approximately 90 minutes of total walking — though this is typically accumulated across the day through multiple shorter walks rather than one continuous session. Breaking it into three 30-minute walks is both realistic and equally effective for health outcomes.
Track it with StepGoals
StepGoals shows your step count progress in real time throughout the day, so you always know how many steps you have left toward your goal and roughly how long it will take to close the gap. The Motivation Box on the main screen displays live sub-targets — so instead of "4,200 steps to go," it might show "300 steps to your next milestone" with a time estimate for how long that walk takes at your pace.
If you prefer planned walk sessions rather than accumulated steps, StepGoals' GPS Sessions feature lets you start a tracked walk with live step count, pace, and distance — useful for seeing exactly how many steps a 20- or 30-minute walk at your natural pace actually generates.
