Distance to Steps Converter
Enter a distance in miles or kilometers to find out how many steps it takes to walk — using your height or stride length.
How to use this calculator
- Choose Imperial (miles) or Metric (kilometers).
- Enter the distance you want to convert.
- Choose your input method: Use my height for an automatic stride estimate, or Enter stride length if you know your exact stride.
- Enter your height or stride length, then click Convert to Steps.
Tip: The stride length card shows what the calculator used, so you can see the estimate behind your result.
How it works
From distance to steps
Steps are calculated by dividing the total distance by your stride length: steps = distance ÷ stride length. Stride length is estimated from height using the ratio stride (inches) = height (inches) × 0.413 for imperial, or stride (cm) = height (cm) × 0.415 for metric — ratios established in biomechanics research and used in pedometer calibration (Tudor-Locke et al., 2004). If you know your exact stride length from a GPS session or treadmill, entering it directly gives more precise results.
Reference distances and their step equivalents
For a person of average height (5'9" / 175 cm) with a stride of approximately 31 inches: 1 mile ≈ 2,040 steps, 5 km ≈ 6,400 steps, and a marathon (26.2 miles) ≈ 53,500 steps. These numbers shift by ±10–15% depending on height and pace. Taller walkers cover more ground per step; faster walkers tend to lengthen their stride, which also affects the total.
Track it with StepGoals
StepGoals reads distance from Apple Health automatically — no need to enter height or stride manually. The app displays today's distance alongside your step count on the main screen and in home screen widgets. If you're walking toward a distance target rather than a step count, StepGoals supports a custom distance goal alongside your step goal.
The GPS Sessions feature gives you the most accurate step-and-distance data of all — it tracks your route in real time using your iPhone's GPS, and the session summary shows exact steps, distance, pace, and a map of your walk. If you're trying to calibrate your stride or benchmark a specific route, starting a GPS Session is the most reliable way to get precise numbers.
