How to use this calculator

  1. Choose Imperial (miles) or Metric (kilometers).
  2. Enter your step count — use today's total or any number you want to convert.
  3. Choose your input method: Use my height for an automatic estimate, or Enter stride length if you know it from a fitness tracker or measured walk.
  4. Enter your height (or stride length), then click Calculate Distance.

Tip: Height-based stride is an estimate. If you have a measured stride from a GPS session or treadmill, entering it directly gives more accurate results.

How it works

Stride length and height

Your stride length is the distance covered with each step, and it correlates closely with height. This calculator estimates stride length using the formula: stride (inches) = height (inches) × 0.413 for imperial, and stride (cm) = height (cm) × 0.415 for metric — ratios established in biomechanics research and widely used in pedometer calibration studies (Tudor-Locke et al., 2004). If you know your exact stride length from a fitness tracker or measured walk, entering it directly will give more precise results.

The 10,000-step benchmark

The 10,000-step benchmark equates to roughly 5 miles (8 km) for an adult of average height — approximately 5'9" (175 cm). At an estimated stride of 31 inches, 10,000 steps covers about 26,400 feet, just under 5 miles. Shorter or taller individuals will see different totals, which is why height input improves accuracy. Distance covered per step typically ranges from 18–30 inches depending on height, pace, and terrain.

Track it with StepGoals

The StepGoals app reads distance data directly from Apple Health, which captures every step and converts it to distance in real time using your device's motion sensors. You don't need to enter your height or stride length manually — it's handled automatically, and the data syncs with Apple Watch if you wear one.

Distance is displayed alongside your step count on the main screen and in StepGoals home screen widgets, so you always know how far you've walked today without opening the app. If you're walking for a distance goal rather than a step target, StepGoals lets you set a custom distance goal alongside your step goal.
