What Step Goal Should I Set?
A personalized recommendation based on where you actually are — not a one-size-fits-all default.
How to use this calculator
- Drag the slider to your current average daily steps. Check your iPhone's Health app or Apple Watch if you're not sure — a 7-day average is ideal.
- Select your lifestyle — how active your day is outside of dedicated walks.
- Select your ambition level — how big a change you're ready to commit to.
- Click Get My Goal.
Tip: The "step-up" card shows exactly how many more steps per day your new goal adds over your current average — a useful gut-check for whether the target feels achievable.
How it works
How the goal is calculated
This tool calculates a personalized step goal using your current daily average as the baseline, then applies an increment based on your ambition level and a lifestyle multiplier. The increment formula is: Gentle = max(500, current × 10%), Meaningful = max(1,500, current × 25%), Ambitious = max(3,000, current × 50%). A lifestyle multiplier (1.0–1.1) is then applied to reflect how much incidental movement your day already contains. The result is rounded to the nearest 500 and capped at 15,000 steps.
The science of goal-setting
The 10–25% increment principle is grounded in behavior change research: goals that are too large relative to current behavior lead to early failure and abandonment, while goals too close to the baseline don't generate adaptation. A 2019 review in Health Psychology Review (Kwasnicka et al.) found that goals slightly above current performance — paired with self-monitoring — produced the strongest long-term behavior change outcomes. Your current average, not a universal number, is the most meaningful starting point for any step goal.
Track it with StepGoals
StepGoals is designed around exactly this philosophy: your goal should be personal and should grow with you. During onboarding, the app asks about your current activity level and suggests a starting goal calibrated to where you actually are. You can update your step goal anytime under Settings → Goals, and the app maintains a goal history so you can look back and see how your ambitions have evolved.
The app's Motivation Box then makes your goal feel achievable each day by surfacing two live sub-targets — breaking your daily total into small, reachable steps rather than one daunting number. This is the practical infrastructure that turns a step goal into a daily habit.
