How to use this calculator
- Select your current activity level — be honest about your typical day, not your best day.
- Select your health goal — what you're hoping to achieve through more walking.
- Click Get My Step Goal.
Tip: Your recommendation comes with a short explanation of why it fits your profile. Once you have it, you can set that exact number as your goal in the StepGoals app under Settings → Goals.
How it works
The research behind the recommendations
This tool uses a lookup table mapping activity level and health goal to a recommended daily step count, informed by population-level research on step count and health outcomes. The thresholds are grounded in a landmark 2021 study published in JAMA Network Open (Saint-Maurice et al.) which found that 7,000 steps per day was associated with a 50–70% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to fewer than 7,000, with benefits largely plateauing beyond that for older adults. Sedentary baselines are set lower to ensure the goal is immediately achievable; more active starting points warrant higher targets to continue generating adaptation.
Why 10,000 steps isn't the answer
The most important principle behind this tool: the biggest health gains come from moving more than you currently do — not from hitting an arbitrary universal number. Going from 3,000 to 6,000 steps delivers a larger physiological benefit than going from 9,000 to 12,000. The 10,000-step default used by most apps originated from a 1964 Japanese marketing campaign for a pedometer called the manpo-kei ("10,000 steps meter") — it has no basis in clinical research. This tool recommends a goal relative to your actual starting point instead.
Track it with StepGoals
Once you have your recommended step goal, StepGoals lets you set it as your daily target directly in the app under Settings → Goals. Unlike most step apps that default to 10,000 and never prompt you to reconsider, StepGoals is built around the idea that the right goal is personal and should evolve as your fitness does. You can adjust your goal at any time, and the app tracks your goal history so you can see how your ambitions have grown over time.
The Motivation Box on the main screen then breaks your goal into live, reachable sub-targets throughout the day — so instead of staring at a big number from a distance, you're always just a short walk away from your next milestone.
